The need for additional space for major exhibitions at the V&A suggests a strategy for future expansion and reorganization. Instead of filling courtyards with multi-story museum spaces, we propose liberating courtyards that are currently filled in with single level structures and utilizing the underground spaces beneath them. In this way, we provide new outdoor spaces for museum visitors, open up historic interiors, and create a new underground network of spaces – accessible from multiple points within the museum – for exhibitions, conservation, exhibition preparation, and storage. In addition, we propose a new East-West axis for the V&A that extends from Exhibition Road to the historic heart of the Museum in North and South Courts.

In 2009, Polis Litoral Ria Fomosa - the public company responsible for Lisbon’s EXPO 98, launched a series of public competitions
for the coastline re-qualification of the Algarve. Mostly known as a mass-tourist destination, Algarve combines a mix of fiercely urbanized areas, with an unspoiled system of islands and marshlands.

This territory is Agharti. It extends through the undergrounds
from the whole world, starting from Mongolia and Inner Mongolia. This territory comes from time or the two continents East and West formed an only one territory. This underneath world is lit by an intense unreal light coming from the plants. The citizens of this strange underground civilization undertake what pushes and appears on the surfaces of the earth's crust, like the trees and grass.

An alternative art gallery in the lineage of the Salon des Refuses
, this project inserts itself under the Barbes metro station using a shifted urban strategy.
An assemblage of powerfully simple rough precast concrete, the modules are attached to each other and secured to the beams of the viaduct. The alignment of different blocks creates spatial diversity while the unified whole protects the artwork and creates a strong interiority. Nevertheless, lateral openings introduce unexpected light from below as well as elevationally reframing views to the site.

Super Levee Urban Farm . Terreform ONE . One Prize Competition

photos: Terreform ONE

The project proposes a global system of levees, serving also as a new  brand of urban farms
at the city's edge, preserving local ecologies while protecting cities from emerging dangers.  Each stage of the levee supports the next.  Clippings, compost, and surplus crops from farming levels are used as nutrients and food for a series of fish farms, marshes, and restorative dune ecologies.  Waste from marine life and nutrients from algal habitats are then used to fertilized farm levels, making the levee a complete ecology.

The International Center of Visigoth Culture takes formal and constructive references from a pragmatic and striven architecture
, ranging from a modernity of minimums, with elemental volumes, to a vernacular architecture, balanced, sustainable and quiet. The proposal is structured around a system of quadrangular cells, with a broken perimeter and fragmented volumes that try to stimulate a large area free of buildings.

Since it enters a twenty-first century, a city's competitiveness has started
to represent a nation's competitiveness. For more rational and efficient economic activities, megacities all over the world are growing up in a way of compactness. However, focusing only on quantitative development, it is true that qualitative development is being neglected. In order to solve such a city problem, we propose 'Self Food Station' like a huge farm near the city.

This intervention in the town of Câmara de Lobos struck us as a unique opportunity.
It came about as part of a competition run by the Regional Government with the objective of fostering reflexion on a short but important stretch of coastline along the western shore of the island’s capital.
Working in such an extreme locale, both beautiful and weathered by social and physical erosion, it was important to make a thorough examination of the site, stripping it down to its bare essentials.

The International Public Competition for the extension of the Orani museum
, dedicated to Costantino Nivola, requires an ambitious, dificcult and delicate project:
1 – Ambitious because it intends to emphasize Nivola’s artistic path;
2 – Difficult as it tries to re-create a life’s intellectual path transforming it into spaces that are searching to describe an artistic activity developed in the latest century. Difficult in the attempt to synthesize it all.
3 – Delicate since it requires an intervention in an existing structure that is, already, an exhibition path integrated in the landscape.

The plot is 5000 m2 and the client didn’t know what to put on it,
so he changed his mind constantly.
We proposed to invent an infinite context, a promenade where he could add program for ever in time without affecting each other. A necklace with more -or less- valuable jewels attached.
In the intersection of the “eight” loop the house is situated, and the interior of the circles crops are suggested to pay less taxes.
The house organization also works as an infinite loop.
The façade reflects the same idea: a mirage…

Unsolicited Architecture

full text: rory hyde dot com blog . unsolicited bootleg

Establishing the 4 pillars of a traditional architectural commission – client, site, budget and program –
the chart declares that unsolicited architecture operates in the absence of at least one of these. Thereby making the project undesirable or even impossible to tackle using the standard tools of the commercial practice. The chart also reinforces the role of reality in the production of an unsolicited project. And here comes my favourite bit: “If you design the object without the financing, you’re an academic; if you design the marketing without the object you’re a politician; if you design the financing without the object, you’re a capitalist.”

De Meelfabriek . Leiden

photos: demeelfabriek . tracked by Cristoph Vogl
The Meelfabriek is an industrial complex of several large buildings that produced flour from different types of grain, brought in by boats on the canal. It grew in different phases from 1883 until 1988, when production was closed down for economical and political reasons.
The cluster of buildings sits on a bastion of the mediaeval fortification of Leiden, originally an open strip of land surrounding the city, which was in the course of the 19th and 20th century gradually developed into an industrial belt. In the late 20th century most of the buildings on the industrial belt were dismantled, following the cities policy to establish a green belt of parkland.

How to make a hotel in the Amstel kwartier
that is intimately linked to the view on the Amstel and Amsterdam? How to make a Hotel that uses the elements of air, water, wood and sunlight for creating an ultimately sustainable hotel? How to use the famed Dutch light for creating beautifully lit hotel rooms? The tower slowly rotates towards the view over the river and the city centre. The wood-cladded facade is designed to fully profit from sunlight and heath. The compact verticality gives the area urban density.

A private home for an artist couple in the Otway region of Victoria, Australia.
The house is formed around a large hexagonal brick wall that presents a tough exterior to the road, while forming a generous and welcoming courtyard to the interior.
The design was developed collaboratively with the clients through the online blog A Sculpture for Living, which continues to track the ongoing developments leading up to construction.
