"Westhof" housing and studios . Munich

source: Christ & Gantenbein architects

The former Post Office situated in the west of Munich’s city center is to be transformed for new uses. The listed historic building dating from the 1920s, consists of a perimeter block surrounding three internal functional buildings. Living and working spaces are planned for the western part of the site. Complementing this existing typology the new lateral construction will provide housing. The recessed building divides the site into a private interior courtyard and an open front court, and offers a flexible range of housing typologies. The slight taper of the volume references the formal language of the existing architecture and allows natural light into the courtyards within this high density area. The existing southern wing fronting a main road accommodates the business premises with offices and studios.
