Donald Judd

boxes . 1989

+ David Zwirner

The four pieces in this room were originally shown together in a single room within one exhibition of twelve similar works installed by Judd at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, in Germany in 1989.These floor-based works demonstrate Judd’s continuing obsession with light and space. Each one is an open box made using anodised aluminium, a treatment that renders a silvery sheen on the surface of the metal. As a result, the interior of the boxes gently shimmers, and reflects colour from the Plexiglas sheets within. The boxes also incorporate a number of dividers, creating a dynamic sense of space within each work that combines with the ethereal quality of the aluminium to striking effect.
