The new Kunstmuseum Bern, with an ensemble of older and contemporary architecture, forms a unique meeting place for art and culture. The leitmotif of this proposal is to both recreate and renew. Firstly, to recreate the original position of the Stettler building as an independent structure, with a clear relationship to the landscape at the border between the urban environment of Hodlerstrasse and the forested slopes of the Aarehang. Secondly, to make room for a new museum and entrance building with a clear contemporary character of its own in dialogue with the older architecture, and the capacity to communicate the future KMB to the city and in a wider context with an international reach. The project sits on the banks of the Seine, in Saint-Ouen, at the heart of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Village. It is built on a former 19th-century industrial site. The urban project, designed by Dominique Perrault, features large “ships” perpendicular to the Seine, with a common skyline for each of the bases: “the waterline.” The Belvedere block is one of these ships, set on the Mail Finot, the major landscaped area in the Village. At the center of the block, SOA has created a tall building (R+10) and two smaller buildings (R+5 and R+6) on the rear street. Continue reading SOA Architectes
