Few Jewish communities used to surpass the one of Mainz in importance and tradition. During the Middle Ages being the major center of religious teaching, this importance can be traced back to a series of influential Rabbis, especially Gershom ben Judah (960 to 1040) whose teachings and legal decisions had impact on Judaism at large. His wisdom was deemed to be so large that he was given the name ‘Light of Diaspora’. The new Jewish Community Center of Mainz attempts to draw out this tradition.

The project respects modern museum as one of wider cultural and entertainment establishments. Functionally museum space is made as one but allowing some of its parts to be divided. Advantage of such solution is possibility to realize contextual and technological requirements of exhibition by separating the space within a necessity for several qualitative exposure or measures at the same time. Such a space dividing model has its economical aspects like rental possibility for specific project needs. The large and shared space provides free event scenography.

Traditions

We are interested in the emotional effect that buildings can have. We are interested in how buildings have been built in the past and how new constructions can achieve an equivalent formal and material presence. We are confused by the laissez faire state of contemporary architecture.

Ecotopia: the second ICP triennial of photography and video

more: Matter Architecture

Ecotopiaries provided the setting for this exhibition showcasing contemporary views of the natural world in this era of undeniable climatic change. The project was installed within two weeks, on a stringent budget, using techniques tolerancing a non-professional construction crew.

Part commentary on America’s dependencies on oil, Ecotopiaries are fabricated out of a non-biodegradable, yet 100% recyclable, petroleum-based polyethylene foam. This single material was repurposed and recombined to create cost-effective A/V viewing rooms, light-diffusing screens, seating, and a/v monitor pods.

Through full-scale prototyping, MATTER innovated ‘woven’ skin panels that could be mass-produced and tolerate tiling into a variety of configurations on-site. The density and direction of the ‘weave’ caused the panels to naturally bow outward, creating the desired forms and requiring minimal structure for support.

The pods are consciously reminiscent of topiary, wryly referencing man’s strange attempts to shape natural growth into stylized constructions.

Ole Bouman, director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI)

source: Studio Banana TV

Ole Bouman has been director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) since April 2007. Before taking up that position he was editor-in-chief of the periodical Volume, a cooperative venture of Stichting Archis, AMO (the research bureau of OMA/Rem Koolhaas) and the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation of Columbia University. He has curated a series of public events for the reconstruction of the public domain in cities that have been hit by disasters, such as Ramallah, Mexico City, Beirut and Prishtina. Bouman has been lecturing Design at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.

The Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) is more than a museum of architecture. It is above all a cultural institute which is open to the public and which uses a variety of methods for communicating about the shaping of human space. The NAI has one of the largest architecture collections in the world; eighteen kilometres of shelves containing drawings, sketches, models, photographs, books, journals and other materials. The NAI presents architecture, urban design, interior design and landscape architecture in more than twenty exhibitions it organizes every year. It also devotes a great deal of attention to developments in industrial and graphic design and other aspects of the designed environment. As a study center, the NAI generates many kinds of publication. NAI Publishers is an independent publishing house affiliated with the NAI. Some of its publications, such as exhibition catalogues, are linked to ongoing NAI activities.

Vacant NL, where architecture meets ideas, Venice Architecture Biennale 2010

Rietveld Landscape, the office appointed by the NAI to curate the Dutch presentation in Venice, decided to emphasize the vacancy of the pavilion during the architecture biennale. The exhibition is a call for the intelligent reuse of temporarily vacant buildings around the world in promoting creative enterprise. Thousands of buildings in the Netherlands lie vacant. Some of them for a week or a few months, many even for years. During the twelfth Venice Architecture Biennale, the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) and Rietveld Landscape will highlight the huge potential of all that temporarily unoccupied space.

Small Scale, Big Change: New Architectures of Social Engagement

more: MOMA

Small Scale, Big Change: New Architectures of Social Engagement (October 3, 2010–January 3, 2011) presents eleven building projects on five continents that bring innovative architecture to underserved communities. The featured architects address the functional requirements of their designs but also aim to have a broad positive effect on the communities they work in, as partners in social, economic, and political transformation beyond the boundaries of their often modest sites. In addition to new modes of participatory design, the projects on display incorporate pioneering site-specific ecological and socially sustainable practices, including the exploration of both new and traditional materials. Populations that have previously rarely enjoyed the attention of architects are engaged in designs incorporating innovation worthy of the broadest attention. The renewed commitment of these architects and many of their colleagues to socially responsible architecture is reminiscent of the ideals of twentieth-century masters, but these designers eschew their predecessors’ utopian, wholesale blueprints for change imposed from above. Small Scale, Big Change presents radically pragmatic, “acupunctural” projects—limited interventions with wide-reaching effects.

Three Internet-based networks—forums in which community leaders, architects, and nongovernmental organizations share information and experience—are also featured in the exhibition, extending its scope beyond the individual projects to include stakeholders in various areas of practice around the world.

These projects have been selected from an increasingly large number of similar initiatives around the world because they exemplify the degree to which architects can orchestrate change, prioritizing work that has social impact but also balances very real concerns of cost, program, and aesthetics. They succeed in providing communities not only with physical spaces but with opportunities for self-determination and an enhanced sense of identity. As a result, these architects are both designers of buildings and moderators of change. Their integrative methodologies could serve as models for the profession at large.

Organized by Andres Lepik, Curator, and Margot Weller, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design.

The exhibition is supported in part by The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art. Research and travel support was provided by the Patricia Cisneros Travel Fund for Latin America.

Searching for a concept to an African house, came up the image of the circular straw matting that provided shelter on African landscape next to the baobab trees.
As we where investigating types of African and Angolan houses with circular plan and the way people live there, we found out that most activities are conducted on the outside, under the protection of a porch. There people work, cook and socialize. The interior is just a shelter. The rooms are situated along the outer wall and common area serves as the central distribution area.
