HE NA DRINI offices . Visegrad
HWKN
The close proximity to the Mehmed-Pasha Sokolovic Bridge is the catalyst that defines this design for the Hidroelektrane na Arini a.d. Visegrad (HE NA DRINI) Office Building. The entire proposal celebrates this important world heritage site, while engaging with the public and creating an efficient workplace.
The building learns from its surroundings: its size, massing and regard to the street, are contextual, but its center is hollow. The central void is on axis with the Bridge to create a dynamic response to its presence. The majestic Bridge should not terminate in the flat façade of an office building, instead its path continues through the building to link pedestrians to the Narrow-Guage Rail and the city beyond. The center of the building turns into a public amphitheater that places the Bridge at center stage.
The central opening provides access to the HE NA DRINI offices and the Bridge Museum, located on the 2nd floor. The Museum’s placement offers a stunning panoramic view over the Mehmed-Pasha Sokolovic Bridge and the Drina River.

Stadtvilla . Klosterneuburg
courtesy of Hertl Architekten . photos: Kurt Hörbst
The empty lot, used as vineyard, was breaking the compact architecture of a street, within the building density of the historic centre of Klosterneuburg.
The apartment house follows the logic of the historic structure by building a villa with atria, to conjoin density with backyard atmosphere. Four courtyards of varied atmosphere and proportion foraminate the roof slab of the single floor building.
The façade is geared to the neighboring architecture according to height and material.
Even though there is only one window referencing the street. Below one of the courtyards – the herb garden – the garage and the rubbish-room are situated on street-level marked by gateway and door.
The entrance is emblematized by a slot in the wall facing the street. The entrance-patio is reached by crossing the slot.
A staircase is leading through the front door, still 132cm underneath ground floor, to the foyer, where wardrobe, garage exit and lavatory are located. Following a bend to the right, facing the light and scaling the final steps there is an expansion from the high-ceilinged foyer to the central hall. The hall offers overlook from the central patio, the covered loggia, along the swimming-pool to the backyard.
The fourth courtyard is greened. One side of the central courtyard is lined by living room, kitchen, library and office. Face to face private functions such as bedroom, bathroom and guestroom are situated. Most of the rooms adjoin to multiple atria.
The consequences are exciting perspectives and moods of light. There is a flow of space among the inner courtyards, and between ashlars of light and air.

The National Gymnastics Centre Pegan Petkovšek is part of the comprehensive renovation of Svoboda Sports Park in Ljubljana. It is the first of the three sports halls that are to be built on the western edge of a belt between an access street on one side and a large greened park layout with sports grounds on the other. The building of the gymnastics centre is placed on the northernmost part of this belt. The northern and western edge of the building reference the building line regulated by the spatial acts, which also stipulate the greatest built ratio and the height of the building. The strict urbanistic regulations necessitate a very compact design that allows for little deviation.

The house on Brunnenstrasse 9 with a total of 1.000 sqm is an extension of the foundations of a building ruin that was the result of a bad investment in the ’90s. The existing consisted of the cellar walls towards the neighboring house, the street and the courtyard, and a cellar ceiling, with exception of the parts of the lift and the drive-through; the steel reinforcement of the incomplete building protruded from the street level. The found structure was not only included but was even further developed in the new building. The angles of sun rays determine the volume of the attic floor, maximizing the light exposure of the building in the back.

How to imagine a museum that liberates the experience of art from the dominance of the site's omnipresent landscape? Rather than organizing the museum's spaces in relation to the site's abundance of daunting nature, this proposal sets out to create a museum that mediates between two worlds: an external world of nature and an internal world of art.

neue Bad . Gland
Preiswerk Marek Architekten

The project is located in Dublin, in an area under a urban regeneration process. Ballymun’s regeneration plan has gradually seen the introduction of a new town, parks, leisure facilities and other physical infrastructure which will increase the significance of Ballymun within Dublin’s city fabric. Although investment efforts have improved urban quality in Ballymun, the Boilerhouse studios aim to provide something that is still missing in Ballymun, the project intends to create an identity that will give the town au unique sense of character and a new spirit. The Boilerhouse studios will be a public facility that will be the reference center of the area. The scheme intends to project a new spirit in Ballymun, for the Boilerhouse studios to be well known in Ireland and Europe,
and thus add a further dimension to the development of Ballymun. The Boilerhouse studios will become a new cultural icon and destination, a force that encompasses social difference in a central point of interest and significance. In this way, the project endeavors to bring a higher quality of living while harnessing the underlying notion of social inclusion.
The project is conceptualized as undertaking a ‘surgical operation’ in the Ballymun neighborhood, by introducing a cultural and artistic program. The Boilerhouse site currently holds uniqueness, a point of reference in Ballymun, with its chimney giving it a characteristic form

Nebuta house . Aomori
Construction began in March 2009 on a unique and sculptural building on the waterfront of Aomori City in Northern Japan. Twelve meter tall ribbons of steel make up a screen that completely encircles the building, with a shifting pattern of light and shadow that changes through the day and night. This mysterious volume enclosed by the ribbon screen will house a deep dark dwelling space for the giant paper characters and creatures of Aomori city’s famous Nebuta festival.
