KYIV ISLANDS MASTERPLAN . KYIV

Mankind has always been in pursuit of the idea of Paradise, especially when living in a metropolis.
If we declare the territory of the Kyiv Islands a National Park, it will become the only city in the world to have a Natural Park amidst a river (paradise?). Instead of trying to turn this geography into a theme park we think that sustainable recreation and tourism in the natural landscape will make for a more interesting destination. The journey through the islands will become the attraction itself.
Connecting the city through bridges is essential for its growth. These specifically designed, linear infrastructure systems make part of the landscape, but they tend to fulfill only a single function. As a contemporary manifestation against the exclusivity of the bridge's purpose, we propose to reprogram the main bridges: occupy infrastructure. A strategy in which these linear barriers become linking structures and the bordering spaces around them are upgraded. The bridges become largescale connecting devices, as well as linear buildings that will enliven the islands with activities, while helping restore their natural habitat.
Densecity: We propose a compact real-estate development, a sustainable city, which occupies only 0,4% of the area available in the Kiyv Islands. The condensed city fragment will avoid long and costly infrastructure interventions on the island. The compressed model has all the qualities of a pragmatic, efficient and well organized city: a regular grid with a platform and tower typology, where only 1/4 o! the area of each individual plot can be repeated in height.
