Kreuzlingen 2K24 . Europan 12 . Konstanz
runner up . design team : Thibaut Muller . Anaïs Godefroy-Rieb . Charles Mannenc . Hugo Alzingre . Arthur Poiret
At the crossroads of two countries, Klein Vendig site Konstanz / Kreuzlingen is disconnected today and under exploited.
Result of a former industrial activity it is today, because of its unique and atypical location, a key place in the two cities evolution.
Our proposal presents a vision at the horizon 2024: the site becomes a structured and landscaped thread reflecting different atmospheres and includes a comprehensive public facility in leisure activities.
The site is both a new landscaped sequence for the lake banks, but offers a multitude of inner green threads.
Moreover, it will be widely available through connections to the cities promoting soft mobility and public transport.
Thus, the site is accessible both from north to south following the walk from the lake shores, and connects to the city by the extension of the main axes.
A vision of this magnitude cannot freeze. It must remain flexible to bring modifications and evolutions in its uses; the landscape is sufficiently flexible but continues to shape developments in order to produce such a unique and unusual area such as the site itself.
Site dynamics induce a linear occupation linking Konstanz and Kreuzlingen to the lake. Real support to the human and informal settlements, landscape proposal should be red as a whole, coherent, structured but flexible. Occupation varies over time ( time of day ) and seasons , revealing a multitude of sequences capable of carrying all types of occupations for residents and tourists.
The attenuation of noise pollution from railway tracks is through a new built space, which includes a base organization integrating the road network. Composed of shops and activities, the base creates the public realm and welcomes office space oriented towards railroad and housing facing the lake. Facing these constructions from 5 to 6 floors, housing schemes take place in strips overlooking shared gardens.
The main concern was to establish a structuring and permeable but spontaneous project to the users’ spontaneous appropriations creating a suitable place at all time and scales appropriations project.
This way, the site is dotted with different intensities throughout the day and seasons. This flexibility is reflected in the landscape strips with varying treatment but also in the various programs that duties adjust as needed.
Finally, the flexibility of the proposal takes into account and supports the implementation of future projects that will easily integrate into the landscaped area.
The landscape is not a static picture, a beautiful picture, but a living milieu. The territory is highlighted throughout the years by trends and intensities of the program, as the pool becomes a ice rink in winter opening largely towards the lake.
Adaptability was essential to give a real meaning to the space dedicated to the Ocktoberfest. This square is 12,000 square meters punctuated by a series of fixed and removable poles offering both a landscape and a functional quality. They are the support to different types of cultural facilities, sport or recreation.
Transversally positioned to frame the landscape, at the crossing of roads, the land becomes border crossing space, a symbolic meeting place and activity.
The slight topography implementation multiplies the uses and varies the views. This way, it also allows incorporating a series of steps looking south of the square and becomes an event venue. This gradient operates as an acoustic barrier, since it protects housing from the sound of activity on the square. Finally, this is a mixed and multi cultural space symbolizing the two countries union.
The identity is not given once and for all, it is constructed and it evolves throughout its existence.
