The brief for the Ílhavo Cultural Centre requested the redesign of the public space in the town centre, inluding a new underground parking lot and a multifunctional facility with an auditorium, exhibition hall, technical offices and comercial spaces. All this had to work with the existing urban features. The Municipality of Ílhavo promoted the Competition ("Concurso de Ideias") from which the recently finished Centre evolved.

There is now a central town square, that provides a public open space, and the material used for the flooring is micro-cube of basalt from the Azores. This material, foreign to this part of the country, provides the "carpet" upon which the two new buildings of the Cultural Centre are set. The surrounding pavements are made of white calcareous rock, widely used throughout the city, thus regaining a sense of continuity - in colour, texture and luminosity - with the original surroundings.
The main function of the Cultural Centre takes places withtin the translucid glass box, with airy walls and ceilings, which allow warm and soft light to bathe the foyer. The scale of this two-floor building is closely related to that of the adjacent City Hall to the east, also filtering the hustle and bustle of the 25 de Abril Avenue.
The design of the auditorium - a box-in-box construction to maximize sound insulation - includes diffuser elements, for an adequate dispersion of the sound reflections. The introduction of variable acoustic mechanisms prepares this hall for events of different characteristics (music, cinema, theatre, dance, conferences).
