Europan 12 . SLOW POLES . Marly

Honorable Mention . KK architetti associati . design team: Simone Moggia, Tiziana d'Angelantonio, Giulio Pons

The main existing public and economic poles in Marly are located near “Route de Fribourg” but they are not connected between them through a unitary system. Route de Fribourg represent a resource for Marly, as it allows its citizens to live in a low-density environment characterized by a significant presence of green, and at the same time allows a fast connection to Fribourg where many people work, study or employ their free time. But the road is also a limit because the important flow of cars passing through it every day encourages to build boundaries to defend private dwellings from noise, extending the time for displacements and hampering the continuity of public spaces.

The main goal of the project is to transform the street into a only one boulevard, from Friburgo train station to Marly Bus Station, to repair the urban fabric “shortening” the distances between public functions, businesses and residential neighborhoods. A unitary vision will reinforce the concept of boulevard as a place for social gathering, either as organic flows system. The proposed strategy aims to use time in both meanings, having as its objective the realization of physical transition paths, temporal and functional. For this reason, it is considered strategic to “shorten” the distances focusing interventions along new footpaths and cycle paths in order to give continuity to public and semi public spaces of residential areas by connecting the districts to existing public functions and at bus stops (slow poles opposite to fast road).
The project site will be a first cross-connection, within the municipal boundaries, between the sports area of the school campus and the Eglise du Saint Sacrement. In this contest the existing urban fabric is characterized by the presence of isolated buildings surrounded by greenery. Their arrangement does not follow rules. This suggests of planning areas Winckler and Saint Sacrement area using buildings characterized by free forms. Their layout will originate an enclosed public space. This solution will ensure a high degree of flexibility favoring the adaptability and the gradual development. The proposal orients functional choices to mix use. In the ground floor will be foreseen alternative functions to the traditional housing.
Only few buildings, located on the edge of the site and not directly involved in the formation of new public spaces structuring, can will be hosted simple housing. The choice of functions is related to the idea of the quality of time and opportunities present in reality of Marly, such as the presence of students. Public spaces are thought in relation to the concept of time (quality of individual and collective time and influence of typological choices and distribution of functions on temporal cycle).
