Valloire is an alpine ski resort at an altitude of 1.430 meters. The church Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption is a 17th Century Baroque church in regional style. It is a designated historic monument. Tradition goes that each parishio-ner brought to Mass material for its construction.
Sophie Calle shows in the church the portraits of thirteen people seeing the sea for the first time. A subtle echo resonates between sea and mountain, the 13 persons and the set of the Baroque church, the silence of the sacred place and the sound of the waves.
‘‘In Istanbul, a city surrounded by the sea, I discovered people who had never seen it. I filmed their first time”.
