Studio octopi

studio octopi were selected by Wallpaper* magazine as one of twenty studios from around the world to appear in their Architects Directory 2011.
Each studio was asked to propose the ultimate single family holiday home designed to be flexible and functional, but also formally and technically innovative.
Located within dense protected woodland in the Cotswolds, the house only becomes visible on entering a small clearing. The nine storey home clad in weathered planes of concrete and zinc reaches up high into the tree canopy.
The inhabitant’s relationship with the woodland alters ascending through the house. The interior volumes are all lined with dark stained timber emphasising the views out to the surrounding landscape. Principle furnishings are in brass. Dappled sunlight on the brass furnishings ignites the interiors, drawing the setting into the heart of the home.
The living space is split over levels 5&6. Level 6 opens onto a poolside terrace. The pool is conceived as another piece of furniture: constructed as a brass tank. The interior offers space for reflection, contemplation and study. Level 9 is a study and aviary. Overhead a brass lined oculus crowns the house, offering glimpses of the sky above
